Art which intervenes, researches and experiments, while understanding itself as part of public life in a city, is the main interest and practice of SOHO in Ottakring, an art project and festival begun in 1999 in the middle of a Viennese (sub)urban quarter.
With numerous illustrations, this publication presents a selection of the art projects curated and produced over the last eleven years in myriad settings. They illuminate the thematic focuses of the individual festivals and elucidate the characteristic aspects of the areas in play, the Brunnenviertel and Sandleiten in Ottakring, both located in the 16th district of Vienna.
The publication bears witness to the immense changes undergone in Brunnenviertel, a district shaped by its street market, and examines the area around the Sandleitenhof, the largest social housing project realized during Red Vienna.
The portrayal of this dynamic collection of artists, cultural producers as well as the active players in this public space belongs to Vienna’s cultural history.
